Old Fashioned Sugar Cookies

A fun Valentine tradition that has been passed down from my mom is making each person in my family a "big heart" cookie for Valentines Day. It's something I always looked forward to as a child and hope that my children will do the same.

3 ½ to 4 C flour
1 tsp baking soda
1 ¼ C sugar
1 egg
1 tsp vanilla
½ C butter
½ tsp salt
½ C sour cream or buttermilk

Mix butter, sugar, vanilla, and egg until well mixed. Mix sifted flour, baking soda and salt and add alternatively with sour cream. Next, I like to add my secret ingredient of 1/2 tsp of almond extract at the last and mix it in before I roll out my dough.

Roll on floured pastry sheet into desired shapes. Bake on greased cookie
sheet at 375 degrees for about 8 min. Do not brown. Makes 2 1/2 dozen

  1. I LOVE your sugar cookies, they are SO soft and my mom did this tradition with us too...even now that we are married we still get one with a big cherry heart shaped gum drop in the middle...its no wonder we get along so great...our moms rock!
